About this course

Journalism is a profession built on the belief that accurate, independent information is essential to a functioning democracy and an informed society. Good journalists gather facts, verify sources, understand the contexts that give events their meaning, and communicate their findings clearly, fairly and accessibly to the audiences who depend on them. As the media landscape has been transformed by digital technology and social platforms, journalism has had to adapt rapidly, but the core commitment to accuracy, accountability and public interest remains as important as ever. At UAL, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year and a work placement, meaning your academic development is accompanied by substantial professional experience within the industry. UAL's location in London, one of the world's major media capitals, gives you direct access to a concentration of news organisations, broadcasters, publishers, digital media companies and PR and communications agencies that is unmatched in the UK. The programme develops both the craft skills of journalism, including reporting, writing, editing, audio, video and data journalism, and the critical understanding of media and its social role that a rigorous journalism education provides. You will develop your practice across different platforms and formats, building a portfolio of published and broadcast work and developing the professional judgment and ethical awareness that journalism demands. Graduates work as reporters, correspondents, editors, broadcast journalists, digital journalists, audio and video producers and data journalists in newspapers, broadcasting, digital media, magazines and specialist publications. The skills are also valued in public relations, communications, content strategy and corporate reporting. Some graduates pursue postgraduate study in journalism, media or communications.
