BA Journalism with Integrated Foundation Year
About this course
Journalism is the practice of gathering, verifying, and communicating information in the public interest. It takes many forms, from breaking news on digital platforms to long-form investigative reporting, broadcast documentary, data journalism, and local community coverage, but all of them depend on the same core abilities: an instinct for what matters, the skills to find and verify information, and the capacity to tell stories that audiences can understand and trust. This four-year, full-time programme at the University of Sunderland includes an integrated foundation year, providing a supported and gradual introduction to degree-level study for students who are returning to education, who didn't quite meet the standard entry requirements, or who simply want a more thorough grounding before moving into the main journalism curriculum. The foundation year eases the transition to university and builds the academic and writing skills that will underpin your study throughout the degree. A year abroad is built into the programme, offering you the opportunity to study journalism in an international context and to bring a broader perspective to your practice. Graduates of journalism programmes work across every kind of media organisation, from national newspapers and broadcasters to regional outlets, digital-only publishers, podcasters, and specialist trade publications. Many begin their careers as reporters or producers, developing beats and platforms over time. Others move into areas such as content strategy, communications and public relations, political reporting, or data journalism. The investigative, research, and communication skills a journalism degree develops are also valued in fields such as law, politics, policy research, and the civil service, where the ability to find information, assess its credibility, and present it clearly is directly useful. Further study in journalism, media studies, or international communications is an option for those who want to deepen a particular specialism.
