BA Landscape Architecture and Design
About this course
Landscape architecture and design is concerned with the planning, design, and management of outdoor spaces, from urban parks, streets, and squares to waterfronts, rural landscapes, and ecological restoration projects. It is a discipline that combines creative vision with technical expertise and environmental understanding, asking how we can shape the spaces between buildings to be healthier, more sustainable, and more pleasurable for the people who use them. As cities face the pressures of climate change, biodiversity loss, and growing populations, landscape architects are increasingly central to how we imagine and build more resilient environments. At Leeds Beckett University this part-time programme allows you to develop skills in spatial design, environmental planning, and landscape management while balancing other commitments. You will engage with design process from initial site analysis and concept development through to detailed drawings and proposals, learning to think at scales ranging from a single courtyard to an entire urban district. The course includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to experience how landscape design is practised and understood in different cultural and environmental contexts, broadening your design thinking and professional outlook. You will develop visual communication skills, environmental literacy, and an understanding of planning policy and regulation. Graduates work in landscape architecture practices, local authorities, environmental agencies, housing developers, heritage organisations, and planning consultancies. The profession is chartered in the UK through the Landscape Institute, and many graduates go on to complete the professional development necessary for full chartered status. Postgraduate study in sustainable urban design, ecology, or planning is another common route for those who wish to specialise further.
