LLB Law and Legal Practice
About this course
Law and legal practice is a degree designed for students who want to combine a rigorous academic understanding of law with the professional skills and competencies that legal practice demands. Law is a discipline that trains you to read complex texts with precision, construct and evaluate arguments, understand the structure of rules and their application to particular facts, and engage with questions of justice, rights and social organisation. Adding a legal practice dimension means you develop practical abilities in advocacy, client communication and professional ethics alongside that academic foundation. At Birkbeck College you will be taught by leading legal scholars alongside expert practitioners, giving you both the theoretical depth of a research-informed legal education and the practical orientation that professional legal work requires. You will study the core areas of English law, including contract, tort, criminal law, constitutional and administrative law and equity, and engage with skills-oriented work in oral and written advocacy, reflective practice, and an understanding of what it means to represent a client's interests responsibly. The programme runs over three years full time. Graduates of law degrees with a practical orientation are well placed for progression into the legal professions, whether as solicitors through the Solicitors Qualifying Examination or as barristers through the Bar Course. The skills in legal reasoning, advocacy and professional ethics developed on this programme are directly relevant to both routes. Beyond legal practice, law graduates are valued across a wide range of careers in business, finance, policy, the civil service, journalism, compliance and regulation, where the ability to understand and work with complex legal and regulatory frameworks is consistently sought.
