LLB Law
About this course
Law is more than a set of rules: it is a system through which society organises itself, resolves disputes, protects rights, and imposes limits on the exercise of power. Studying law at degree level means developing the ability to understand, question, and apply a complex and evolving body of doctrine, but it also means engaging with law as a social and political institution, asking why rules take the forms they do, who benefits from them, who is excluded, and how they might be reformed. A critical approach to legal education, one that treats law not just as content to be learned but as a system to be interrogated, produces graduates who are genuinely intellectually equipped for professional and public life. At the University of Kent, this part-time programme is taught in exactly this spirit: law is presented not merely as rules to be memorised but as a living system that shapes and can be shaped by those who understand it. You will study the foundational areas of English law, including contract, tort, criminal law, constitutional and administrative law, equity and trusts, and land law, while also developing the research, analytical, and written communication skills that legal practice and many other professional roles require. You will engage with legal theory and the social context of law, giving your learning intellectual depth beyond the purely technical. The part-time mode allows you to study while managing other commitments, whether work, family, or other responsibilities. Graduates of law programmes at Kent and elsewhere move into careers in legal practice as solicitors or barristers, via further vocational training, as well as into the civil service, public policy, journalism, human rights work, compliance, finance, and management. The analytical and communication skills a law degree develops are valued across a very wide range of professional contexts. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in law, human rights, criminology, public administration, or a specialist legal field.
