LLB Law
About this course
Law is one of the foundational academic disciplines, examining the rules and principles that govern how societies operate, how disputes are resolved, and how rights and obligations are defined and enforced. An LLB law degree provides both the conceptual frameworks of legal theory and the practical understanding of how law works in practice, developing skills in legal reasoning, statutory interpretation, case analysis and the communication of complex arguments in precise and clear terms. These skills are valued well beyond legal practice itself, in business, public service, policy and any role that requires careful thinking about rules, rights and responsibilities. At the University of Sheffield you will study law over three years of full-time study, building a critical understanding of the Common Law of England and Wales alongside a practical appreciation of how law functions within and shapes society. A sandwich year provides substantial professional experience, and a year abroad allows you to study how law operates in a different jurisdiction and legal culture, developing comparative legal awareness that is increasingly relevant in international careers. Work placement is integrated into the programme, connecting academic learning to professional practice. The typical tariff of 152 reflects the intellectual rigour expected of students entering a qualifying law degree at a research-intensive university. Graduates who wish to qualify as solicitors or barristers progress through the Solicitors Qualifying Examination or Bar qualification after their LLB, with the law degree providing the qualifying law degree foundation. Many Sheffield graduates go on to successful careers in legal practice across commercial law, the bar, criminal practice and public interest law. Others apply their legal training in management, compliance, financial services, the civil service, human resources, journalism or international roles. The combination of an LLB from a respected institution with the placement and abroad experience built into this programme is a strong platform for a competitive graduate career.
