LLB Law with Criminology
About this course
Law and criminology are disciplines that illuminate each other in important ways. Law provides the formal framework within which wrongdoing is defined and responded to, developing the analytical skills to work with legal rules, principles and institutions. Criminology asks why crime happens, who commits it, how victims are affected, and whether the criminal justice system actually achieves the goals of deterrence, punishment and rehabilitation that it claims to pursue. Studying both at the University of Huddersfield gives you a genuinely comprehensive understanding of the relationship between law, crime and justice. This three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year and a work placement, giving you direct professional experience within the legal system or criminal justice sector before you graduate. You will cover the core areas of English law, including criminal law, contract, tort, constitutional law and the principles of the legal system, alongside criminological theory and research, policing, courts and sentencing, victimology, youth justice and the social context of crime. You will develop legal analysis skills alongside the research and critical thinking capabilities that criminology demands, and the placement year gives you practical experience that is valuable both professionally and academically. Graduates move into a wide range of careers in the legal profession, the criminal justice system and related public services. Those seeking to qualify as solicitors or barristers will need to complete further professional training, and this degree provides the academic foundation for those routes. Others move directly into the police, probation, prison service, youth justice, victim support, social work and community safety roles, where understanding the relationship between law and criminological realities is directly useful. The placement experience built into this degree gives graduates a practical advantage in a competitive market.
