About this course
Law with criminology is a combination that examines both the formal legal framework through which society regulates itself and the academic discipline that studies crime, criminal behaviour, and the criminal justice system. The Department of Law and Criminology at Royal Holloway has a reputation for high quality research and teaching. Whilst studying law and criminology, you will explore the fundamental principles of justice, equity, and equality within the framework of English and European law. You will be introduced to the discipline of criminology and will review some of the key debates around the causes of crime, the effectiveness of punishment, the experience of victims, and the operation of policing, prosecution, and imprisonment. At Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, this four-year full-time programme includes a year in industry and a year abroad, giving you both direct professional experience in a legal, criminal justice, or related setting and an international perspective on the legal and criminological questions you are studying. You will be equipped with a wide range of transferable skills that are highly sought after by employers across many sectors, including legal analysis, critical reasoning, research, and written and oral communication. The combination of legal knowledge and criminological understanding gives you both the technical competence of legal training and the broader social science perspective on how crime and justice operate in practice.
