About this course
Law with international relations is a combination that reflects the reality that legal systems do not exist in isolation: they are shaped by the political, diplomatic, and geopolitical contexts in which they operate, and understanding those contexts deepens your understanding of how law works and why it matters. Law develops the analytical precision to interpret statutes and case law, construct and evaluate arguments, and engage with the ethical and theoretical dimensions of legal systems. International relations examines how states, international institutions, and other actors interact in a world where no single authority holds ultimate power, and how norms, treaties, and institutions have developed to govern that interaction. At the University of Surrey, this three-year full-time programme develops your legal knowledge across the core areas of English law alongside an engagement with international relations that adds genuine depth and breadth. You will cover contract, tort, criminal law, constitutional and administrative law, and other foundational subjects, while also studying international law, diplomacy, global governance, and the political forces that shape how legal frameworks are created and applied.
