LLB Law with Politics and Human Rights
About this course
Law with politics and human rights is a degree that situates legal study within its broader political and ethical context, recognising that law does not exist in a vacuum but is produced, contested, and applied within systems of power that have profound consequences for human lives. Politics provides the analytical tools to understand those systems, while human rights frameworks give you a set of universal principles against which legal and political arrangements can be evaluated. At Goldsmiths, University of London this three-year full-time programme reflects the college's distinctive critical and interdisciplinary approach to the humanities and social sciences. You will study the core areas of English law alongside political theory, the politics of rights and justice, international human rights law, and the social and historical contexts in which legal and political systems have developed. The programme encourages you to ask not just what the law says but whether it is just, whose interests it protects, and what alternatives are possible. Goldsmiths brings particular strengths in critical legal studies, the politics of social movements and inequality, and the intersections of law and culture. You will encounter perspectives from feminist legal theory, postcolonialism, and critical race theory alongside more conventional doctrinal and political analysis. Graduates go on to careers in law, human rights organisations, NGOs, social justice advocacy, the civil service, public policy, journalism, and education. The combination of legal knowledge and political and ethical analysis is valued in any role that involves understanding and challenging the systems within which people live. Many also continue to postgraduate study in law, human rights, political science, or related fields.
