About this course

Linguistics with German brings together the scientific study of language in general with the practical and academic development of a specific major world language. Linguistics is concerned with how human languages are structured, how they are acquired, how they vary across communities and how they change over time. It encompasses phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics and the cognitive and neural dimensions of language, providing a systematic and empirical framework for understanding what language is and how it works. German, as the most widely spoken native language in the European Union and a major language of science, philosophy, literature and commerce, provides a rich and practically valuable case through which to explore those questions. At the University of York, this three-year programme develops your language proficiency alongside your linguistic knowledge, with language teaching conducted in German and focused on society, politics and culture, as the university's own description notes. Faculty who are native speakers contribute to a learning environment in which language develops naturally and rapidly. A sandwich year and work placements are part of the programme, providing structured opportunities to develop professional experience and, crucially, real-world language use alongside your academic study. The combination of formal linguistic analysis and language competence gives you both the theoretical understanding of how languages work and the practical ability to use one fluently. Linguistics and German graduates are well placed for careers that require both systematic analytical thinking and intercultural communication. Graduates go on to careers in translation and interpreting, language teaching, speech and language therapy (with further training), computational linguistics, publishing, journalism, international business, the civil service, research and education. Further study in linguistics, German, translation studies or a related field is also common.
