Both disciplines deal in pattern, structure, and formal systems: mathematics makes these explicit through logic and proof, while music articulates them through time, sound, and expressive performance. The connections run deep, from the mathematical analysis of acoustic phenomena and tuning systems to the way composers have used proportional structures, and from the statistical modelling of harmonic progression to the algorithmic composition methods that have become part of contemporary musical practice. At Leeds, this programme is designed to let you pursue dual specialisms in the areas of mathematics and music that genuinely interest and excite you. On the mathematics side, you will engage with pure and applied branches of the subject, building your capacity for rigorous proof and quantitative reasoning. In music, you will develop as a performer, analyst, and musical thinker, engaging with a wide repertoire and a range of theoretical and historical perspectives. The programme includes a sandwich placement year and a year abroad, both of which give you extended professional or international experience, alongside work placement opportunities.
