MA Mathematics and Spanish
About this course
Mathematics and Spanish is a pairing that develops two quite different but highly complementary capabilities. Mathematics trains the mind to reason precisely and abstractly, to identify pattern and structure, and to handle complexity through the rigour of proof and calculation. Spanish opens access to one of the world's major languages and the richly diverse cultures of Spain and Latin America, developing linguistic fluency alongside critical understanding of literatures, histories, and societies across three continents. At the University of St Andrews you will study across four years on a full-time programme, with a year abroad that develops your Spanish language skills through immersion in a Spanish-speaking country. The mathematics strand will teach you to understand complex patterns and structures and to develop the analytical tools with which to describe and categorise mathematical phenomena, whether they relate to physical and biological systems or to the internal architecture of mathematics itself. You will study pure mathematics, including analysis, algebra, and topology, as well as applied and computational mathematics, building a broad and rigorous mathematical foundation. The Spanish strand develops your language competence from its current level through to a high level of proficiency, alongside the study of Spanish and Latin American literature, culture, and history that gives the language its full depth and context. The combination of mathematical rigour and linguistic and cultural breadth produces graduates with an unusual and genuinely attractive profile. Finance, data science, actuarial work, and technology companies value the mathematical training. International organisations, the diplomatic service, business development roles in Spanish-speaking markets, and journalism and translation value the linguistic and cultural competence. Teaching, in both mathematics and Spanish at secondary level, is a well-supported direction with strong employer demand. Postgraduate study in mathematics, Spanish, or linguistics is available for those who wish to deepen their expertise, and the combination is also good preparation for business school or law school.
