BSc Mathematics with Education
About this course
Mathematics with Education brings together two disciplines that are deeply connected in practice: the formal rigour of advanced mathematics and the rich, human science of how people learn. Mathematics is a subject of exceptional breadth, encompassing pure abstraction, statistical reasoning, and applied modelling. It trains the mind to think precisely, to construct logical arguments, and to find structure in complexity. Education, meanwhile, draws on sociology, psychology, developmental science, and philosophy to understand how children grow intellectually and socially, and what conditions support that growth best. At Aberystwyth University, this three-year full-time programme allows you to develop your appreciation of advanced mathematical and statistical techniques alongside a broad study of childhood development. You will engage with the sociological, psychological, and educational factors that influence how children learn, and examine the theories and evidence that underpin modern educational practice. The mathematics component will take you into university-level analysis, algebra, and applied mathematics, equipping you with skills that go well beyond what is required for secondary school teaching. This combination is particularly well suited to those who wish to become primary or secondary mathematics teachers, and who want a deeper grounding in both their subject and in the science of how it is taught. But the degree opens other doors too. The analytical skills from mathematics are valued in finance, data analysis, research, and business, while the education component provides a strong foundation for roles in educational policy, curriculum development, school leadership, and community learning. Further study, whether a PGCE for those going into teaching or a master's in mathematics, education, or a related field, is a common next step for graduates of this programme.
