BSc Mathematics with Philosophy
About this course
Mathematics and philosophy have been in conversation since the ancient Greeks, whose insights about number, proof and logical necessity laid the foundations for both disciplines. Mathematics explores the abstract world of quantity, structure and pattern, developing through rigorous proof the certain knowledge that distinguishes it from other fields. Philosophy asks the deepest questions about the nature of that knowledge itself: what is a number, what does it mean for a mathematical statement to be true, and is mathematics discovered in the world or invented by the human mind? These are not merely academic questions; they connect to the foundations of logic, the limits of formal systems and the relationship between mathematics and reality. At Royal Holloway, this three-year full-time programme combines both disciplines, and the combination develops two complementary intellectual capacities. Mathematics builds your skill in handling complex data, finding elegant solutions to precise problems and reasoning rigorously within formal systems. Philosophy develops your ability to analyse ideas, question assumptions, evaluate arguments and communicate challenging thoughts with clarity and care. A placement year and a year abroad are built into the programme, and work placement opportunities are integrated throughout, giving you professional experience and an international perspective alongside your academic formation. Graduates of mathematics with philosophy programmes bring an unusual combination of formal reasoning ability and philosophical depth to their careers. Finance, actuarial science, data science, technology, academic research and the civil service all draw on the quantitative skills the mathematics component provides. The philosophical training is valued in law, policy, journalism, education and any field where careful thinking about complex questions is central. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in mathematics, philosophy, logic, computer science or financial mathematics, where the intellectual formation of this combination provides a particularly distinctive foundation.
