MA Mathematics with Spanish
About this course
Mathematics with Spanish is an unusual and intellectually stimulating combination, pairing one of the most formally rigorous of all disciplines with the study of one of the world's most widely spoken languages and its rich cultural traditions. Mathematics develops abstract reasoning, formal proof, and quantitative analysis to levels that few other subjects require, training the mind to be precise, logical, and creative in equal measure. Spanish opens access to more than twenty countries across Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean, as well as to a literature and cultural history of extraordinary richness and diversity. This four-year, full-time programme at the University of St Andrews leads to a Master of Arts with Honours and includes a year abroad, which is typically spent in a Spanish-speaking country and is central to developing the fluency and cultural understanding that the language component requires. You will study mathematics across analysis, algebra, probability, and other areas to a high level, while also developing your Spanish language skills, engaging with literature, film, and the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. The combination produces graduates with an unusual profile, mathematically rigorous and linguistically and culturally versatile. Graduates pursue careers in which either or both components of their degree add value. The mathematical training supports roles in data science, finance, actuarial work, software engineering, and quantitative research, while the Spanish language opens opportunities in international business, diplomacy, journalism, translation and interpreting, and organisations working across Latin America and Spain. The combination of mathematical rigour and linguistic fluency is particularly valued in international finance, global consultancy, and organisations that operate across Spanish-speaking markets. Further postgraduate study in mathematics, Spanish studies, or applied mathematics is a natural extension for those who wish to develop specialist expertise.
