About this course

Mathematics and Philosophy is a combination that addresses some of the deepest questions in human knowledge: what is the nature of mathematical truth, how does formal reasoning work, what can we know and how, and what is the relationship between the abstract structures that mathematics describes and the physical world we inhabit? These are not merely academic puzzles. They are foundational questions that have driven the development of logic, computation, and science, and both disciplines bring rigour and precision to their investigation of them. At the University of Glasgow, this four-year MA (Hons) programme includes a year abroad and offers a wide variety of course options in the Honours years, allowing you to develop your own intellectual interests within the degree's broad framework. You will study pure mathematics, including algebra, analysis, and number theory, alongside formal logic, epistemology, philosophy of mathematics, ethics, and metaphysics. The logic that underpins both disciplines is a thread that runs through the programme: mathematical logic is the formal study of proof and deduction, and philosophy of mathematics asks what those proofs are actually about and what gives them their necessity and certainty. The ambassador scheme attached to the programme gives students the opportunity to spend time in schools, experiencing teaching at first hand and developing professional skills in communication and explanation, which complements the analytical training of the degree itself. Graduates of Mathematics and Philosophy move into careers in research, computing and software engineering, data science, finance and actuarial work, teaching, the civil service, and management consulting. Philosophy sharpens ethical and argumentative reasoning while mathematics provides technical depth, and the combination is valued in fields where both matter. Postgraduate study in mathematics, logic, philosophy, or computer science is also a natural pathway for graduates of this programme.
