BEng Mechanical and Design Engineering
About this course
Mechanical and design engineering is a degree that combines the core principles of mechanical engineering with the creative and human-centred discipline of design engineering. Mechanical engineering is concerned with the analysis, design and manufacture of machines, systems and components, drawing on physics, mathematics and materials science to solve problems involving forces, motion, energy and materials. Design engineering adds a focus on innovation and human factors, asking not just whether a system can be built but whether it should be, and how it can be designed to best serve the people who will use it and the environments in which it will operate. At City St George's, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you structured professional experience in industry alongside your academic development. London's concentration of engineering, technology and manufacturing businesses provides a rich context for placement and networking opportunities. You will develop the technical skills to design, develop and operate advanced mechanical engineering systems, working with the mathematical and computational tools of the discipline alongside design methodologies, computer-aided design and prototyping techniques. The programme engages with sustainability and the drive for innovative solutions across sectors including transport, energy and manufacturing, reflecting the real challenges that mechanical and design engineers are being asked to address. Graduates work as mechanical engineers, design engineers, product development engineers and technical project managers across automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, energy, medical devices and consumer electronics. The combination of engineering rigour and design thinking is particularly valued by organisations that are developing new products or systems. Many graduates pursue professional accreditation with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers or Institution of Engineering Designers. Postgraduate study in specialist engineering areas is a natural option.
