About this course

Mechanical design engineering places the act of designing, at the centre of mechanical engineering practice. Where conventional mechanical engineering trains you in the analytical principles governing machines and structures, design engineering goes further in asking how those principles are brought to bear in creating new products and systems, how form, function and manufacture interact, and how engineering decisions are made under real conditions of uncertainty, constraint and collaboration. The interplay between design and manufacturing is fundamental to the field, and the ability to move fluently between conceptual ideas and practical realisation distinguishes the best engineers. At Glasgow this four-year full-time programme is grounded in mainstream mechanical engineering, covering mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, materials science and engineering mathematics, while placing sustained emphasis on the design process through both individual and group projects. You will develop skills in computer-aided design, manufacturing processes, product development and the kind of systems thinking that modern engineering demands. The programme includes a year abroad, providing an opportunity to experience engineering education and industrial practice in a different country, and a typical entry tariff of 216 points reflects the programme's rigour and competitive nature. Mechanical design engineers work across a remarkable breadth of industries, from aerospace, automotive and marine engineering to consumer products, medical devices, energy systems and advanced manufacturing. The combination of analytical depth and design capability makes graduates particularly valuable in roles that require both technical credibility and creative problem-solving. Many pursue chartered engineer status through the relevant professional institution, which is the standard route to senior practice. Others move into product development, innovation management, research and development, or entrepreneurship. Postgraduate study in design engineering, advanced manufacturing, robotics, or a specific technical field is a natural continuation for those who want to specialise further.
