BEng Mechanical Engineering
About this course
Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest engineering disciplines, encompassing the design, analysis, manufacture, and maintenance of physical systems across an enormous range of industries and applications. From the turbines that generate electricity and the engines that power vehicles to the medical devices that support human health and the robots that are transforming manufacturing, mechanical engineers apply fundamental principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, materials, and dynamics to create things that work in the real world. At Manchester Metropolitan you will build a strong theoretical and practical foundation in mechanical engineering, studying mechanics of materials, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, manufacturing processes, control systems, and engineering design. The programme equips you with both the analytical skills and the practical competence that employers look for, and it is offered part-time, making it accessible to students who are working or who need to combine their studies with other commitments. Part-time engineering study can be particularly valuable when it allows you to apply academic learning in a working context as you progress. The programme includes a sandwich placement element, giving you structured professional experience in an engineering environment. Mechanical engineering graduates are employed across aerospace, automotive, energy, defence, rail, consumer products, manufacturing, and the built environment. The profession offers clear routes to professional registration as a chartered or incorporated engineer, which many graduates pursue as an important professional milestone. Those who want to extend their technical expertise can continue to postgraduate study in specialist areas of mechanical engineering, materials, or energy systems.
