About this course

Mechanical engineering is the discipline that applies physics, mathematics and materials science to the design, analysis, manufacture and maintenance of physical systems involving force, motion, heat and energy. From turbines and engines to robots, medical devices, manufacturing equipment and renewable energy systems, mechanical engineers create the physical technologies that underpin industrial and technological life. As industries evolve, the most valuable engineers are increasingly those with knowledge that spans mechanical and electrical systems, reflecting the reality of modern products and machinery. At the University of Derby, this part-time programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, recognising that students come with different levels of preparation and benefit from different kinds of professional experience alongside their studies. The foundation year builds the mathematical and scientific foundations needed for degree-level mechanical engineering. The main programme develops your expertise in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, materials, manufacturing processes, dynamics, control systems and engineering design, with particular attention to the electrical and mechanical integration that employers increasingly seek. The sandwich year, year abroad and work placement give you professional experience across different industrial contexts and international perspectives on engineering practice. Mechanical engineers are in sustained demand across manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, energy, defence, medical devices, consumer products and robotics. Many work towards chartered engineer status with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. The broader knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems that Derby emphasises makes graduates particularly versatile. Further study at master's level in mechanical engineering, manufacturing, mechatronics or energy systems is available for those who want to specialise or pursue research careers.
