Mechanical engineering sits at the heart of the physical world. It is the discipline concerned with the design, analysis, manufacture, and maintenance of mechanical systems, from small precision components to large-scale infrastructure, from the engines that power aircraft to the robotics systems transforming manufacturing. Mechanical engineers apply principles from physics, mathematics, and materials science to create things that work reliably and efficiently, and they do so in some of the most innovative and consequential fields of modern industry. At University College London, this four-year programme includes an integrated foundation year designed to give students a thoroughly supported entry into engineering study. The foundation year builds the mathematical and scientific foundations that underpin all engineering disciplines, and prepares you to enter the main mechanical engineering programme with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed. From the main degree onwards, you will study the core areas of mechanical engineering: thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, materials, dynamics, and design. You will develop strong mathematical and computational skills alongside the practical ability to model, analyse, and prototype engineering systems. This is a full-time, four-year programme. Mechanical engineering graduates are in demand across a wide range of industries, including aerospace, automotive, energy, manufacturing, biomedical engineering, defence, construction, and consulting.
