BA Media and Communication
About this course
Media and communication is the study of how information, meaning, and culture circulate in society through technologies, institutions, and practices that are constantly changing. It asks how the ways we produce and consume media shape our understanding of the world, how power is exercised through representation and narrative, and what the implications are for democracy, identity, and public life when media is in our pockets and the platforms that distribute information are global and commercially driven. The discipline combines critical analysis with practical engagement, developing both your ability to think about media and your capacity to work within it. At the University of Leicester, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year and a year abroad option. The foundation year provides a supported entry point for students who want to build their academic confidence and foundational knowledge before entering the main degree, and it is a recognised route to the full honours programme. The year abroad gives you the opportunity to study media and communication in a different national context, which is particularly enriching in a discipline that is inherently concerned with how different societies manage information and culture. You will study media history and theory, digital media, journalism, political communication, cultural studies, and research methods, developing both the critical frameworks to analyse media and the practical skills to contribute to it. Graduates go on to careers in journalism, broadcasting, digital media production, public relations, marketing, policy, and research. The combination of critical thinking and practical communication skills the degree develops is valued across public, private, and voluntary sector organisations, and many graduates go on to postgraduate study in journalism, media studies, communications, or related fields. Some pursue research careers in media and cultural studies, while others build professional careers in the expanding digital media landscape.
