BSc Media and Communication
About this course
Media and communication is a degree that takes seriously both the study of how media works and the development of the skills to work within it. The media landscape has been transformed by digital technology, social platforms and the fragmentation of audiences, and understanding these changes, who produces media, who owns it, how it reaches its audiences and what effects it has, is the business of media studies. Communication theory, meanwhile, provides frameworks for understanding how messages are constructed, transmitted, interpreted and contested across different contexts. At Surrey, this three-year full-time programme prepares you for the realities of a media and communication industry that is being reshaped by digital tools and artificial intelligence. The programme integrates digital skills and awareness of emerging technologies throughout, building the confidence and creative ability that employers in tomorrow's media environment will need. You will develop your understanding of media industries, journalism, digital content, public relations and communication strategy, alongside critical frameworks for analysing how media functions in society and culture. You will engage with theory and practice in combination, developing your analytical understanding of media alongside practical skills in digital content production, research and communication. Surrey's location in the South East of England provides good access to London's media and communication industries, and the programme is designed with employability as a genuine consideration throughout. Graduates move into careers across journalism, broadcasting, digital media, public relations, content creation, communications, advertising, marketing and social media management. The analytical skills the degree develops also translate well into roles in policy, public affairs, education and the cultural sector. Some graduates pursue further study in media, journalism, communication or related fields.
