BA Media and Communication
About this course
Media and Communication is a discipline concerned with how messages are produced, distributed, received and interpreted in contemporary societies. It encompasses the study of journalism, advertising, public relations, digital media, film, television, radio and the social and political forces that shape how information and culture circulate in an increasingly complex and fragmented media landscape. The field is both analytically demanding, requiring the ability to interpret media texts and industry structures critically, and practically oriented, developing the professional skills needed to produce effective communication across multiple platforms. At the University of Winchester, this full-time three-year programme is supported by fully-equipped multimedia facilities and strong links with the professional world, including creative agencies, content creators, independent film producers, radio stations, newspapers and festivals. You will build a combination of practical and transferable skills, creative thinking and applied academic knowledge, developing both the ability to critique media and communication and the technical confidence to produce work at a professional standard. The connections with industry partners provide direct access to professional networks and opportunities that are valuable for building a media career. Media and Communication graduates go on to careers in journalism, broadcasting, public relations and communications, advertising and marketing, digital content creation, social media management, documentary and film production, arts administration and the creative industries more broadly. Many graduates develop portfolio careers that combine different media roles as the industry continues to evolve and converge. Further study in media studies, journalism, communications or digital media is available for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or a research dimension to their professional practice.
