BA Media and Philosophy
About this course
Media and philosophy is an unusual and rewarding combination, pairing the critical study of how media systems, texts, and technologies shape society with the oldest and most rigorous tradition of sustained intellectual inquiry we have. Philosophy brings to media studies the tools of conceptual analysis, ethical reasoning, and epistemology, while media studies grounds philosophical questions about perception, truth, representation, and power in the concrete realities of broadcasting, digital platforms, journalism, and popular culture. The two disciplines ask complementary questions and produce graduates who can think both analytically and critically about some of the most important problems of the contemporary world. At Nottingham Trent University this programme is offered part-time, which means you can study while managing other commitments, building your academic understanding at a pace that works alongside your life. The programme includes a sandwich year and work placement activity, giving you the opportunity to connect your theoretical learning to professional environments in media, communications, or the wider cultural sector. You will engage with philosophy of mind, ethics, political philosophy, and aesthetics alongside modules on media theory, journalism, digital media, and cultural studies. Graduates of media and philosophy programmes develop strong skills in critical thinking, argumentation, and written communication that transfer well across many professional contexts. Common destinations include journalism, broadcasting, publishing, public relations, communications consultancy, policy research, and the charitable sector. The philosophical dimension is particularly valuable in roles that require careful ethical reasoning, such as content moderation, editorial policy, public affairs, and academic research. Postgraduate study in philosophy, media studies, communications, or a specialist area such as digital ethics or media law is a natural route for those who want to go further.
