About this course

Media and communication is the study of how messages are made, distributed and received across different platforms and technologies, and what effects those processes have on culture, society and individuals. Tourism examines one of the world's largest industries, exploring how places are promoted and experienced, how travellers make choices, how economies and communities are shaped by visitor activity, and how the sector is responding to environmental and cultural pressures. Combining these two subjects creates a programme with real breadth, drawing on cultural theory, media analysis, geography and business thinking. At Liverpool Hope University, this three-year full-time programme benefits from its setting in Liverpool, a city with a distinctive media and creative sector and a rich cultural history that has itself been shaped by tourism. The programme includes a sandwich year, a work placement and a year abroad, making it particularly well-structured for building professional experience alongside academic study. The placement elements give you direct experience in media, communications or tourism-related roles, while the year abroad provides both personal development and exposure to the tourism industry and media cultures in a different country. You will study media theory and analysis, digital communication, journalism, public relations, the tourism industry and visitor experience, destination management and the relationship between media representation and how places are understood and visited. Critical thinking, communication skills and the ability to work creatively across multiple formats are central to the programme. Graduates go on to careers in media production, communications, public relations, digital marketing, tourism management, destination marketing, events, hospitality and the cultural sector. The combination of analytical and practical communication skills developed through the degree is valued across a wide range of employers. Some go on to postgraduate study in media, tourism, cultural studies or related fields.
