BA Media Communications
About this course
Media communications is the study of how information, culture and meaning are produced, circulated and consumed across the expanding range of media platforms that shape contemporary life. It encompasses journalism, broadcasting, digital content, public relations, marketing communications and the social media landscape, asking both practical questions about how effective communication works and critical questions about who controls the flow of information and what effects it has on public knowledge and debate. At Nottingham Trent University this three-year programme develops your skills as a professional communicator alongside your critical understanding of how media industries operate. You will learn to produce content across a range of media formats and to understand the strategic, creative and technical dimensions of contemporary media practice. The programme is designed to prepare you for the fast-paced and constantly evolving media landscape, developing both the flexibility to adapt to new platforms and technologies and the foundational skills that remain valuable regardless of how the industry changes. A sandwich year and work placements are built in, providing substantial professional experience in a media or communications organisation before you graduate. NTU's industry connections support placements that offer genuine learning opportunities in real professional environments. Graduates work across journalism, public relations, marketing and communications, digital content production, social media management, corporate communications, broadcast production and campaign management. The breadth of the programme means graduates are prepared for a range of roles rather than a single narrow specialism, which is an advantage in a media industry where flexibility and the ability to work across formats and platforms is increasingly valued. Some graduates specialise further through postgraduate study in journalism, PR, marketing, digital media or communications management. Others build careers in adjacent fields such as advertising, brand management or event communications.
