BSc Medical Innovation and Enterprise
About this course
Medical innovation sits at the boundary between scientific discovery and practical change in healthcare. The field asks not just what new treatments or technologies are possible, but how they can be developed, tested, financed, and brought to the people who need them. Enterprise in this context means understanding the pathways through which ideas become products and services, the regulatory and ethical landscape they must navigate, and the organisational structures, whether commercial, public or charitable, through which they reach patients. University College London's Medical Innovation and Enterprise degree addresses all of this in an integrated three-year full-time programme. You will study the science underpinning contemporary healthcare, including areas such as diagnostics, drug development, digital health and medical devices, alongside the business, policy and regulatory frameworks that determine whether innovations actually reach clinical practice. Modules draw on UCL's exceptional research environment and its deep connections with NHS partners and the life sciences industry in London. You will develop skills in critical appraisal of evidence, project management, health economics, intellectual property and entrepreneurship. The programme is designed for people who want to drive change in healthcare from a position that spans science and business, rather than sitting entirely within either. The careers this degree opens up are diverse and genuinely consequential. Graduates go on to work in the pharmaceutical industry, medical device companies, health technology assessment bodies, NHS innovation programmes, venture capital and health policy. Some build start-up companies of their own; others take roles in government agencies or international health organisations. The programme also provides strong preparation for postgraduate study in health technology assessment, public health, business administration or clinical research. If you are drawn to medicine as a system that needs to improve, and want to be part of shaping that improvement, this is a degree worth serious consideration.
