MBChB Medicine
About this course
Medicine is one of the most demanding and rewarding educational paths available, combining an exceptionally rigorous scientific education with the clinical training needed to become a doctor, the professional most trusted to understand, diagnose and treat the full complexity of human illness. A medical education develops knowledge of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, pathology, microbiology and the clinical sciences alongside the communication skills, ethical reasoning, diagnostic judgment and professional values that define the practice of medicine at its best. At the University of Leicester, this five-year full-time programme places clinical experience at its heart from the very beginning of the course. You will meet patients from the outset, engaging with real clinical situations while you are still developing your scientific and theoretical understanding. This patient-facing approach ensures that your academic learning is always anchored in the human realities of medicine, and it develops the clinical reasoning and communication skills that take many years to build. Teaching is delivered in world-class facilities including a purpose-built clinical skills unit and anatomical dissection using human cadavers, giving you the hands-on scientific and clinical preparation that medical training requires. The programme develops your scientific knowledge, clinical skills and professional identity across the five years, with progressively greater clinical responsibility as you advance. Leicester's research strengths in areas such as cardiovascular medicine, diabetes, and genetic epidemiology enrich the academic environment. After graduating, doctors complete the Foundation Programme before moving into specialty training in any of the medical disciplines: general practice, surgery, medicine, psychiatry, paediatrics, obstetrics, emergency medicine and many more. The scope of career development within medicine is very broad, and the qualification is respected internationally.
