BMBS Medicine with a Foundation Year
About this course
Medicine is one of the most demanding and rewarding of all degree programmes, preparing students for a career in clinical practice through a sustained period of academic and professional education that typically takes five years. Medical graduates are responsible for diagnosing illness, prescribing treatment, performing procedures, and supporting patients and families through some of the most difficult experiences of their lives. The breadth of knowledge, clinical skill, and professional judgement the role demands means that medical education is both intensive and cumulative, building across years from the science of how the body works to the complexity of clinical decision-making in real patient encounters. At the University of Nottingham, this programme includes a foundation year at the beginning, making it a six-year full-time route in total. The foundation year is designed for students who do not yet meet the standard entry requirements for direct entry into the medical degree, typically in science subjects, but who demonstrate the potential to succeed with additional preparation. This route is significant because it extends access to medicine, one of the UK's most competitive and historically socially exclusive professions, to a wider range of students. Across the programme you will study the biomedical sciences that underpin clinical practice, including anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, pathology, and microbiology, alongside the clinical, communication, and professional skills that effective doctoring requires. Nottingham's medical school has a well-established problem-based learning approach that integrates science and clinical context throughout the degree, and clinical placements in local NHS trusts begin early and intensify as you progress. Graduates of Nottingham's medical programme proceed to foundation year training in the NHS, and from there into specialist training across all areas of clinical medicine and surgery. Medicine offers one of the clearest graduate pathways of any degree, with a well-defined route from graduation into lifelong professional practice.
