BSc Mental Health Nursing
About this course
Mental Health Nursing is a profession with a central purpose: to support people experiencing mental illness, psychological distress and emotional difficulty in ways that promote recovery, wellbeing and independence. Mental health nurses work across a wide range of settings, from inpatient wards and crisis services to community teams and primary care, building therapeutic relationships with people facing conditions ranging from depression and anxiety to psychosis and complex trauma. The role demands exceptional communication skills, ethical sensitivity and the ability to manage risk thoughtfully while maintaining a commitment to person-centred care. At the University of Cumbria this three-year full-time degree leads to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, which you will achieve on graduation by meeting the NMC's requirements for entry to the mental health nursing register. You will develop your skills and confidence in purpose-built clinical skills and simulation facilities, including a simulated ward, high-dependency care areas, home spaces and an immersive simulation room, before undertaking clinical placements across a variety of mental health settings. The programme balances classroom and simulation-based learning with substantial practice experience, developing the clinical confidence and professional knowledge needed to begin your career as a qualified mental health nurse. NMC registration as a mental health nurse opens pathways into a wide range of clinical and community settings. Many graduates begin in acute inpatient, crisis or community mental health teams before developing specialist expertise in areas such as eating disorders, forensic mental health, rehabilitation, older adult mental health or child and adolescent mental health services. Career progression can lead to specialist, advanced and nurse consultant roles, as well as into management, education and research. The profession offers strong job security and genuine opportunities to make a difference to people's lives.
