BSc Mental Health Nursing
About this course
Mental health nursing is the branch of nursing concerned with supporting people experiencing mental illness, psychological distress and the complex needs that arise from long-term mental health conditions. It is a profession that demands genuine empathy, strong therapeutic communication skills and the ability to build trusting relationships with people who may be frightened, in crisis or profoundly unwell. Mental health nurses practise in inpatient settings, community teams, crisis services, forensic units and specialist clinics, applying evidence-based interventions within a framework of recovery-oriented, person-centred care. At the University of Northampton this three-year full-time programme prepares you for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a Registered Mental Health Nurse. You will develop the clinical knowledge, professional skills and personal qualities needed to work effectively with people experiencing conditions including depression, anxiety, psychosis, bipolar disorder, eating disorders and personality disorders. The curriculum covers psychiatric nursing practice, psychological therapies, risk assessment and management, pharmacology, safeguarding, the Mental Health Act and the ethical and legal frameworks that govern compulsory treatment. Clinical placements are central to your training, placing you in real mental health settings across the range of services where mental health nurses work. You will develop strong therapeutic communication skills alongside clinical and organisational competence, and you will learn to work effectively within the multi-disciplinary teams that deliver modern mental health care. Graduates register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and work across NHS mental health trusts, community services, crisis teams and the independent sector. Career progression leads to specialist roles, advanced clinical practice, team leadership, mental health nursing research and education. Postgraduate study in mental health nursing, psychotherapy or psychiatric nursing is available for those seeking further specialisation.
