About this course

Middle Eastern studies is an interdisciplinary field that brings together the study of languages, history, politics, religion, literature, and culture of one of the world's most complex, contested, and historically significant regions. From the ancient civilisations of Mesopotamia and Egypt through the spread of Islam, the Ottoman Empire, European colonialism, and the formation of modern nation states, the Middle East has shaped and been shaped by global history in ways that continue to define contemporary international relations, religious life, and cultural production. Understanding this region requires both linguistic access and deep contextual knowledge. At the University of Edinburgh, recognised internationally as a leading institution for the study of the Middle East, Middle Eastern languages, and the Islamic world, this four-year full-time programme gives you access to world-class scholars and world-class collections. You will engage with the history, politics, society, and cultures of the region from a range of disciplinary perspectives, developing expertise that goes beyond the simplifications that often characterise public discourse about the Middle East. Language study is typically a central component, with options that may include Arabic, Persian, Turkish, or Hebrew, building direct access to primary sources and contemporary society. A year abroad is available, giving you the opportunity to study in the region and to develop your linguistic and cultural knowledge through immersion. With a typical entry tariff of 168 UCAS points, this degree attracts highly motivated students with a genuine interest in the region. Graduates pursue careers in diplomacy and foreign affairs, intelligence, international development, journalism, humanitarian organisations, academia, cultural heritage, business, and the many roles in government, NGOs, and international organisations that require expertise in the Middle East. The combination of regional knowledge, language skills, and analytical training is a significant differentiator in a world where informed engagement with the region is consistently in demand. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in Middle Eastern studies, Arabic, Islamic studies, international relations, or development.
