About this course

Midwifery is a profession at the centre of one of the most profound experiences in human life. Midwives provide care to women and their families throughout pregnancy, labour, birth, and the postnatal period, combining clinical skill with emotional intelligence and a deep commitment to women's autonomy and wellbeing. The role requires excellent clinical judgement, the ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team, and the compassion to support families through both joyful and difficult moments. At Queen's University Belfast, this three-year, full-time programme is designed to equip you with the knowledge, skills, and professional attributes needed to practise as a registered midwife under the Nursing and Midwifery Council. You will develop a thorough understanding of normal physiology in pregnancy and birth alongside the skills to identify and respond to complications and to work effectively alongside obstetricians, neonatologists, and other healthcare professionals. Woman-focused and family-centred care is at the heart of the programme's values, and you will learn to practise in ways that respect women's choices and support their wellbeing across the full maternity journey. Personal tutors support you throughout your studies, providing academic and pastoral guidance, and the programme has been recognised for the quality of its student experience. Clinical placements are an integral part of the training, placing you in real maternity settings under professional supervision. Graduates of midwifery register with the NMC and practise as midwives in NHS hospitals, community settings, and birth centres. The profession offers substantial opportunities for career development, including roles in specialist areas such as fetal medicine, neonatal care, perinatal mental health, and public health midwifery. Many midwives also move into research, education, management, and policy roles. International opportunities exist across the Commonwealth and beyond, and the qualifications are recognised in many countries.
