About this course

Dual-field nursing is a demanding and distinctive form of training that prepares you to qualify across two recognised fields of nursing practice, in this case learning disability nursing and children's nursing. Learning disability nursing is centred on supporting people with learning disabilities to live as independently and well as possible, enabling access to health care, and working with individuals, families, and communities across the lifespan. Children's nursing focuses on the care of infants, children, and young people from birth through to young adulthood, across settings ranging from community care to acute hospital wards and specialist services. Qualifying across both fields gives you a breadth of perspective and competence that is distinctive and valued in the nursing workforce. At the University of Chester, this four-year full-time programme is structured to meet the requirements of both fields simultaneously, integrating academic study with clinical practice placements across both specialisms. You will work in real clinical settings from an early stage, developing the practical skills, professional values, and patient-facing competence that nursing demands. The programme places service users and carers at the centre of learning, with involvement in classroom teaching as well as placements, which reflects the person-centred philosophy that underpins contemporary nursing practice. You will be taught by academics who are themselves registered nurses with specialist expertise and research experience in their fields. You will study the theoretical and scientific foundations of nursing alongside the ethical, legal, and policy frameworks that govern professional practice, and will develop the communication and relational skills that are as important in nursing as clinical knowledge. Graduates of this programme are eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council across both fields, which provides significant flexibility in where and how you work. Careers span NHS community and hospital settings, specialist learning disability services, children's hospitals and paediatric units, residential care, school nursing, and independent sector roles. Postgraduate study and specialist practitioner training are available to those who wish to advance.
