BA Modern Greek and Beginners' Italian
About this course
Modern Greek and Italian are languages that connect you to two of the most culturally and historically rich traditions in the European world. Modern Greek carries the inheritance of ancient Greece while reflecting the distinctive literary, musical, and political culture of a contemporary nation at the crossroads of Europe, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean. Italian opens access to one of the most celebrated literary traditions in any language, to the art, philosophy, and thought of the Renaissance and beyond, and to a modern nation that remains central to European politics, culture, and economics. Studying both together at Oxford allows you to pursue depth in Greek while building Italian proficiency from scratch. At the University of Oxford, this four-year, full-time programme includes Italian taught from beginner level, so no prior knowledge of Italian is required before you start. You will develop spoken and written fluency in both languages while also engaging with literature, film, linguistics, history, and cultural studies in the contexts of both traditions. Oxford's tutorials give you intensive intellectual engagement with your subject in small group or one-to-one settings, demanding a high level of independent thinking and sustained analytical writing. The breadth of options available allows you to focus your studies on the areas that interest you most, whether literary, historical, linguistic, or cultural. A typical entry tariff of 184 points reflects the very competitive nature of admissions. Graduates with dual language degrees from Oxford are exceptionally well placed for careers in diplomacy, international business, translation and interpreting, publishing, journalism, cultural organisations, academia, law, and the civil service. The combination of Greek and Italian is linguistically rich and gives graduates access to both a smaller specialist community and the much larger Italian-speaking world. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in modern languages, area studies, translation, or linguistics, building on the breadth and depth of the undergraduate degree.
