BA Modern Languages (French and Spanish)
About this course
French and Spanish are two of the world's most widely spoken languages, together giving access to communities across five continents and to two of Europe's richest literary and cultural traditions. French is the language of Moliere, Proust, and Camus, of Enlightenment philosophy, of international diplomacy, and of vibrant contemporary cultures across France, sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean, and beyond. Spanish opens the vast and diverse world of Latin American literature and culture alongside Spain's own extraordinary artistic heritage. Studying both together deepens your sense of how languages shape thought and culture and gives you genuine versatility in a multilingual professional world. At the University of Bath you will study this four-year full-time programme, which includes a sandwich year and a work placement. Bath's language programmes are known for the high level of linguistic competence they develop, and this degree is designed to take you to advanced proficiency in both French and Spanish through a combination of language classes, literary and cultural study, and extended professional immersion. The sandwich year typically involves a period living and working in a French-speaking and a Spanish-speaking environment, embedding your language skills in real social and professional contexts. The placement adds a further professional dimension, giving you evidence of competence in a working environment that employers value highly. The typical entry tariff is 152 points. Graduates with high-level French and Spanish are sought across a wide range of careers, including international business, diplomacy and foreign affairs, journalism, translation and interpreting, law, education, and the creative industries. Bath's reputation and the structured professional experience built into this degree make graduates particularly competitive. Further study in translation, interpreting, linguistics, international relations, or European studies is a natural progression for those who wish to specialise or pursue research.
