MA Modern Languages (German and Italian) and Management
About this course
German, Italian and management is a combination that equips you to operate at a senior level in internationally oriented organisations where both language ability and commercial judgement are required. German, the most widely spoken first language in the EU, opens access to the dominant economy of Central Europe, its extraordinary literary and intellectual tradition, and a culture whose influence on philosophy, science, music and literature is unmatched in the modern period. Italian gives you access to one of the most culturally rich nations in Europe, a country whose contributions to art, architecture, music, fashion, food and design have shaped global aesthetic standards and whose economy includes world-leading industries in engineering, luxury goods and manufacturing. Management brings the strategic, organisational and commercial thinking needed to lead effectively in business contexts. At the University of St Andrews, the MA (Hons) in German and Italian follows the Scottish four-year honours structure and includes a year abroad, allowing you to spend time in a German-speaking or Italian-speaking country as part of your academic programme. St Andrews's modern languages provision develops language skills to a high level of proficiency, combining linguistic training with the exploration of the cultural, historical and literary heritage of the German-speaking and Italian-speaking worlds. The management component adds commercial depth and rigour. The typical entry tariff for this programme is around 232 UCAS tariff points, reflecting St Andrews's highly competitive admissions. You will develop sophisticated proficiency in both languages through reading, speaking, writing and listening, working with literary texts, cultural history and contemporary media alongside management modules in strategy, marketing, finance and organisational behaviour. Graduates are exceptionally well placed for international business roles involving German and Italian markets, diplomatic and foreign service, translation, management consulting, international law and postgraduate study in management, business or European studies.
