MA Modern Languages (German and Russian) and English
About this course
Modern languages studied to a high level in three languages together, German, Russian, and English, is an exceptionally ambitious intellectual undertaking that positions graduates at the intersection of some of the most important literary and cultural traditions of Europe and beyond. German brings you into contact with one of Europe's great literary traditions, from Goethe and Schiller to Mann and Brecht, and with the intellectual heritage of German philosophy, music, and art that has shaped modern thought. Russian opens the literature of Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Chekhov, and Akhmatova, as well as the history and contemporary realities of one of the world's most consequential nations. English literature provides both a third linguistic and cultural perspective and the critical framework developed by a degree-level engagement with literary texts. This four-year, full-time programme at the University of St Andrews leads to a Master of Arts with Honours and includes a year abroad, which is typically spent in Germany, Russia, or another relevant country, and is essential for developing the linguistic fluency and cultural understanding that the degree demands. You will develop all three languages to a high level, engaging with literature, history, culture, and contemporary contexts across the German-speaking world, the Russian-speaking world, and the Anglophone world. Graduates with this combination of languages are exceptionally rare and correspondingly sought after in contexts where multilingual and cross-cultural capability matters. Careers in diplomacy, international organisations, European institutions, translation and interpreting, journalism, academic research, and international business are all natural destinations. The intellectual range and linguistic depth the degree develops are valued wherever sophisticated engagement across cultures and traditions is required. Further postgraduate study in German, Russian, comparative literature, or European studies is a natural extension for those who wish to pursue specialist academic careers.
