About this course

German, Spanish and Greek is a demanding and distinctive combination that develops proficiency in three languages from quite different linguistic traditions alongside deep engagement with the cultures, literatures and histories associated with each. German is the most widely spoken first language in Europe, the language of a rich literary and philosophical tradition and one of the world's most important economies. Spanish is spoken by over 500 million people across Europe, Latin America and the United States, and carries a literary and cultural heritage that spans Cervantes to contemporary Latin American fiction. Greek, whether ancient or modern, opens access to one of the world's oldest and most influential literary and intellectual traditions. At St Andrews, this four-year MA programme develops your linguistic and cultural expertise across all three languages to a high level. You will develop advanced proficiency in German and Spanish, engage with their respective literatures, cultures, histories and films, and develop your Greek alongside its specific linguistic and cultural contexts. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you immersive experience in at least one of the language communities you are studying. St Andrews's Modern Languages department is internationally regarded, and the programme benefits from faculty with deep expertise across German, Spanish and Greek-speaking worlds. Graduates of this combination are genuinely rare and consequently very competitive in the job market. Diplomacy, international law, translation and interpreting, academia, teaching, journalism, cultural institutions, international business and the civil service are all destinations where proficiency in three European languages is a real asset. Postgraduate study in languages, comparative literature, area studies or translation is a natural option.
