BA Modern Languages (Two Languages) and Linguistics
About this course
Studying two languages alongside linguistics is an intellectually rich combination. Each language you study gives you access to a different cultural and literary tradition and develops a different set of cognitive habits. Linguistics, meanwhile, provides the scientific framework for understanding what language itself is: how its structures work, how meaning is encoded and decoded, how languages are acquired and how they change over time, and how they vary across social groups and geographical regions. Bringing languages and linguistics together means you can use what you learn about linguistic structure to deepen your understanding of the specific languages you are studying, and vice versa. At the University of Southampton, this four-year full-time programme allows you to study two of French, German, or Spanish alongside a sustained engagement with linguistics. You will develop genuine proficiency in both languages, covering grammar, writing, reading, listening, and spoken communication at an advanced level, while also studying the structure of language more broadly through phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics, and language acquisition. The combination sharpens your ability to reflect on language explicitly, making you a more analytical learner of the languages you study and a more perceptive observer of how language functions in society. Graduates from modern languages and linguistics programmes are highly employable across a wide range of fields. Language proficiency in two European languages combined with analytical linguistic training opens doors in translation and interpreting, speech and language therapy with further postgraduate training, language teaching, publishing, international business, journalism, and the civil service. Postgraduate study in translation, applied linguistics, language education, and modern languages is a natural progression, and many graduates pursue doctoral research in linguistics or literary and cultural studies.
