About this course
Molecular biology is one of the most fundamental and rapidly developing areas of modern science, concerned with the molecular mechanisms that underlie the function of living cells. It examines how genetic information is stored, replicated, transcribed, and translated into protein, and how these processes are regulated to produce the specific patterns of gene expression that determine cell identity and function. Since the revolution brought about by the discovery of DNA's structure and the subsequent development of techniques for manipulating genetic material, molecular biology has been central to advances in medicine, biotechnology, agriculture, and our understanding of evolution and life itself. At the University of Manchester, this four-year full-time programme begins with a foundation year that provides additional scientific preparation before the main degree curriculum begins, making it accessible to students who would benefit from consolidating their background in biology, chemistry, and mathematics before engaging with degree-level molecular biology.
