BSc Molecular Biology
About this course
Molecular biology is one of the great intellectual achievements of twentieth century science. Beginning with the discovery of the structure of DNA in the 1950s and culminating in the sequencing of the human genome, molecular biology has transformed our understanding of how living organisms work, how genes are expressed and regulated, and how mutations underlie disease. Today it underpins entire industries in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, and it continues to advance rapidly, with genome engineering technologies now enabling precise editing of DNA in ways that will have profound impacts on medicine, agriculture, and our understanding of life itself. At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you international research experience alongside the core academic content. The programme moves from foundational molecular and cellular biology in the early years to cutting-edge content in later years, covering gene expression, protein structure and function, cell signalling, genome engineering, and the molecular basis of disease. Aberdeen has a strong research profile in biomedical and molecular sciences, and the programme reflects the research activity of a faculty who are actively advancing knowledge in the field. The year abroad adds an international dimension, allowing you to encounter different research environments and to build scientific networks that may be valuable throughout your career. You will develop laboratory skills in molecular techniques that are standard in research and industry, alongside the ability to design experiments, analyse data, and engage critically with scientific literature. Graduates from molecular biology programmes pursue careers in pharmaceutical research, biotechnology, medical research, genomics, clinical research, science writing, and regulatory science. Many continue to postgraduate study, including PhD programmes in molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, or related disciplines, which is the standard route into academic and industrial research careers.
