BA Music Production
About this course
Music production sits at the intersection of musical creativity and technical craft. The producer's role has evolved from technical engineer to creative collaborator, and often to artist in their own right: shaping the sound of a recording, making decisions about arrangement and texture, working with technology to realise musical ideas that would be impossible without it. Understanding how to produce music at a professional level means developing your ear, your musicianship, your technical skills, and your creative instincts simultaneously. At Edge Hill you will create, record, and produce music in well-equipped on-campus studios, developing your craft through practical work supported by specialist teaching. The programme covers digital audio workstations, recording and mixing techniques, sound design, synthesis, music technology, and the business and cultural contexts in which music production takes place. You will develop an appreciation of music across a wide range of genres and styles, and specialist modules broaden your technical and artistic range beyond any single tradition. The three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year and a year abroad, giving you professional experience in the music industry and the chance to engage with music production in an international context. The placement component is particularly valuable for building the industry connections that a production career depends on. Graduates go on to careers as music producers, sound engineers, recording studio engineers, music technology educators, live sound engineers, and music industry professionals in areas including A&R, music supervision, and production management. The skills developed on this programme are also applicable to sound design for games, film, and television. Many graduates build portfolio careers that combine production work with teaching, performance, and other music industry roles.
