BA Music with Philosophy
About this course
Music and philosophy are disciplines with a long and productive relationship. Philosophy has grappled with the nature of music, its emotional power, its relationship to language and meaning, and its role in human life since antiquity. Music, conversely, offers philosophy some of its most challenging test cases: questions about what it means to express or represent something, about the objectivity of aesthetic judgements, and about what listening involves as an act of mind. Studying them together develops both the technical and creative musicianship that a music-led degree provides and the analytical rigour that philosophy demands. At Royal Holloway, this three-year full-time programme takes music as the major element, accounting for most of your studies, with philosophy as a sustained complementary strand. On the music side you will develop as a performer, composer, or musicologist depending on your strengths and interests, exploring the breadth of the Western tradition and beyond. On the philosophy side you will engage with epistemology, ethics, philosophy of mind, aesthetics, and the history of philosophy, developing your ability to construct and evaluate arguments with precision. A sandwich year and year abroad are part of the programme, and work placement experience is integrated throughout. Graduates from music-based degree programmes pursue careers as performers, composers, music teachers, music therapists, arts administrators, sound designers, and music journalists, alongside a wide range of roles in arts education, broadcasting, and the cultural sector. The philosophical training adds particular value in roles that require critical analysis and strong written argument, including journalism, policy work, and academic research. Postgraduate study in music, musicology, philosophy, and arts management is a natural next step for many graduates.
