About this course

Musical theatre and music production is a combination that brings together the art of performance with the craft of making recorded and produced music, two fields that have become increasingly intertwined as musical theatre has embraced digital production, amplification and sound design as central elements of the theatrical experience. Musical theatre develops your skills as a performer across singing, acting and movement, training you in the demanding triple-threat tradition of the form. Music production develops your technical and creative abilities in recording, mixing, producing and engineering sound. At Liverpool Hope University, this four-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year, a work placement and a year abroad. The programme is delivered in Liverpool, a city with one of the most distinguished musical histories in the world and a lively contemporary music scene that provides a distinctive context for studying both musical theatre and production. The sandwich and placement elements give you direct professional experience in theatrical or music production settings, building industry connections and practical competence. The year abroad provides exposure to musical theatre and music production cultures in another country. You will develop your performance craft alongside technical skills in recording, music technology, production software and sound design, with the opportunity to integrate these in the context of musical theatre production. Both creative and technical work is supported by critical and contextual study of the history and industry of musical theatre and contemporary music. Graduates go on to careers as performers in musical theatre and music, as music producers, sound designers, recording engineers, music educators, arts administrators and creative producers. The combination of performance and production skills is particularly relevant in contemporary theatre and live music contexts where the two fields intersect. Some go on to further professional training or postgraduate study in performance or music technology.
