BA Musical Theatre
About this course
Musical theatre is a performing art that demands a rare combination of skills: the ability to act with genuine emotional truth, to sing with power and precision, and to move with physical freedom and choreographic awareness, often simultaneously. Unlike training in a single performance discipline, musical theatre training requires you to develop all three strands in an integrated way, because in the art form itself they are never truly separate. It is a discipline that is technically rigorous, physically demanding, and creatively rich, drawing on traditions that range from Broadway and the West End to new writing and experimental performance. At Anglia Ruskin University, this three-year full-time degree develops the full set of skills that musical theatre training requires. You will work on acting through song, ensemble singing, jazz dance, ballet, tap, and stage choreography, learning from experienced musical directors, artistic directors, and choreographers in professional performing arts facilities including the Mumford Theatre. The programme develops your technical range across all three performance disciplines while also developing your capacity to put those skills at the service of character, story, and emotional truth. You will work on a range of repertoire, from classic musical theatre through to contemporary work, and will build the stamina and versatility that professional performance demands. You will graduate with the performance skills, professional habits, and resilience needed to pursue a career in musical theatre, knowing how to prepare for auditions, how to sustain a performance over a run, and how to keep developing your practice beyond graduation. Graduates pursue careers as professional performers in musical theatre, as well as in television, film, commercial work, and community arts. Some move into choreography, direction, or teaching. The skills developed through musical theatre training, physical intelligence, vocal range, emotional expressiveness, and the capacity to perform under pressure, are also valued in many creative and communication-focused careers.
