BA Musical Theatre
About this course
Musical theatre is a demanding art form that requires performers to work at a high level simultaneously in three distinct disciplines: acting, singing, and dance. Its history runs from the operettas of the late nineteenth century through the golden age of the American musical to the contemporary stage, and it continues to evolve as new writers and directors bring fresh perspectives to the form. Training in musical theatre means developing technical mastery in each of the three elements while learning to integrate them convincingly in performance, and it requires physical stamina, emotional range, and a sustained willingness to work in ensemble. At Edge Hill you will immerse yourself in the history, culture, and craft of musical theatre, developing your technique and finding your own performance voice across acting, singing, and dance. You will study the repertoire from its foundations to the present day, engage with the theatrical traditions that shape the form, and prepare for the demands of professional performance through regular practical work. The programme is offered part-time and includes a sandwich placement year and a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to develop professional experience and engage with musical theatre in an international context. The work placement element means you can test your skills in a professional setting and build the industry connections that a performance career depends on. Graduates pursue careers as performers in theatre, television, and film, and also move into direction, choreography, arts administration, music education, community theatre, and related creative roles. The training develops discipline, collaboration, and communication skills that are valuable well beyond the stage, and many graduates build portfolio careers that combine performance with teaching, facilitation, or other work in the arts.
