Musical theatre is a performance discipline that brings together singing, dance and acting within the specific conventions and traditions of the musical stage. At degree level, musical theatre is both a practical training in performance skills and an academic engagement with the history, theory and cultural significance of the form. Developing as a musical theatre performer requires the integration of three distinct skill sets alongside the audition technique, resilience and professional readiness that a competitive industry demands. At Southampton Solent University you will study musical theatre over three years of full-time study, developing your skills through regular performances, expert coaching, and industry showcases that prepare you for real audition environments. You will receive training in voice, movement, acting and dance alongside study of musical theatre history and analysis, building both technical capability and the interpretive intelligence that distinguishes versatile performers. The programme includes audition preparation as a deliberate focus, recognising that the ability to present yourself effectively is itself a professional skill. The typical tariff of 120 reflects a programme that is open to students with genuine performance ability and commitment, regardless of the precise nature of their prior educational qualifications. Graduates pursue careers as performers in professional theatre, touring productions, cruise ships, theme parks, television and film, and in corporate entertainment and cabaret. Others work in stage management, directing, choreography, arts administration or community arts performance.
